Key West High School Principal Amber Acevedo has given permission for the Horace O’Bryant Buccaneers to open their inaugural middle school football season at legendary Tommy Roberts Memorial Stadium. The Bucs will host traditional rival Marathon on Thursday, September 7, 2017, at 6 pm.
HOB Athletic Director John Grimesey was thrilled with the news. “Obviously, we have a lot of people to thank, but Mrs. Acevedo, Key West A.D. Neda Jackson and Teresa Konrath up in MaAcevedo, Key West A.D. Neda Jackson and Teresa Konrath up in Marathon come immediately to mind. They have all been great helping this rookie out getting this setup. We still have a great deal of work to do, but we are determined to put on a first-class event that respects the venue”
Much of that work starts on June 2, with the Buccaneers’ spring minicamp lead by Volunteer Drew Haggard and his staff. All lower-keys students who will be in 7th or 8th grade next year are welcome to attend and the camp is free. The camp will run through June 5th with workouts each day.
Grimesey wanted to be sure to lay out the welcome mat. “We want to get the word out that any student in the lower keys who attends a school that does not have football, is welcome to join our program, free of charge. Actually, that goes for all sports at HOB. We want to increase youth participation in sports wherever we can.”
Interested parents should contact Grimesey at (305)296-5628 ext.65342 or firstname.lastname@example.org.

Kate’s essay included these heartfelt thoughts and beliefs about America:
- The America I believe in does not stand down, but stands up for what is just. Whether the issue is taxes or war, Americans use their voices.
- The America I believe in, works to find a better solution even if taxes are needed to help. This act of standing up for what we believe in represents the America I believe in.
- America is an established country and we can do anything we put our minds to. John F. Kennedy once said, “My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”
Congratulations to Kate for her faith in America and thank you to the Southernmost VFW Post 3911 for allowing the words of our future leaders to be heard.
The FOCUS Parent Portal is a tool designed to enhance communication and involvement for you in your child's education. This portal will allow you to monitor your child's progress in school by providing timely access to both assignments and grades that are entered by the teacher throughout the grading period. This communication tool will improve your ability to assist your child and to communicate with the teacher if necessary.
2. The last 4 digits of your child's Social Security Number. The SSN must be on file with the school in order for online registration to be completed.
3. Your child's date of birth.
If you do not have the information listed above, or your child's SSN and/or date of birth are not in the FOCUS system, you will need to register in person at your child's school after January 9, 2017.
Once you have created your FOCUS Parent Portal account, you will be able to view your child's grades and attendance information by visiting the FOCUS login page (also linked under the Parents drop-down menu above).
If you intend to pick up your child before normal dismissal time, we ask that you please send a note with your child to the front office first thing in the morning stating when the child will be picked up and why. This will allow the office staff to write a dismissal pass so that your child can be waiting in the front office upon your arrival. As students now must return their Chromebooks to their homeroom teacher before leaving, this will greatly simplify the process.
Thank you for your help with this!
The following fact sheets are now posted to the department’s website:
Dear Sir or Madame,
Three years ago, under the leadership of Principal Mike Henriquez and his administrators, the Horace O’Bryant School of Key West ventured to create an athletic program. Henriquez and Athletic Director Kaitlyn Leeman created three teams. Currently, Buccaneer volleyball and boys and girls basketball play at a competitive level. We are very proud of all three teams.
As we move into the 2016-2017 school year, we have a new Principal, Christina McPherson, and Athletic Director, John Grimesey. We endeavor to build on the foundation that has been established. This means creating a multiple sports program that increases opportunity, accountability, and participation among our young people.
To that end, we have begun implementing our running club, which we hope to build into a competitive Cross Country team, and will open our 2017-2018 year with a football team and cheerleading squad. After accomplishing the goal of putting together solid squads in cheerleading and football, we will move to expand to additional opportunities. The accountability and participation will grow along with those opportunities.
As a Key West sports fan, you understand the need to fundraise to field the high school-type athletic program we are striving for. This letter is the start of that fundraising effort.
Between now and winter break, we hope to hang 20 banners dedicated to our sponsors in the gym and on our athletic field fence. These banners will measure 4 feet X 8 feet, will include your choice of artwork and will be visible to thousands of local sports fans. The initial cost of banner sponsorship is $500, and the banner will hang through winter break 2017-2018. After this time, continuing yearly sponsorship will cost $250.
Please contact me if you are willing to take part in this important program. We appreciate how many requests of this type you receive. We believe the benefits of our program will benefit the whole Key

- Some have approached me about using this opportunity to make a larger donation in order to fund the football program in its first year. Obviously, this would be greatly appreciated and timely.
Three students at Horace O'Bryant School earned $100 each for passing their industry certification exam in Key Applications during the 2015-2016 school year. Isabel Cruz, Finn Saunders, and Julia Niles were three of the fourteen students who completed the exam and earned an industry certification.
We want you to be part of the team. There are many ways to help us reach our goal of student success at Horace O’Bryant. You can volunteer, join PTA or SAC, or you can sponsor a classroom. Sponsoring a class earns recognition for your contributions and support through the school website, the classrooms and district recognitions.
If you would like to Sponsor a Classroom, please complete the bottom portion of the sponsorship form and return it, along with the money, to the classroom teacher or the bookkeeper in the office. You determine the amount you wish to sponsor. Your support of education is greatly appreciated. Click below for sponsorship form.
