VFW WRITING CONTEST WINNER
The America I Believe In was the topic of the VFW’s 2016-17 writing contest for middle school students in grades 6-8. Sixth grade Horace O’Bryant student Kate Carlson was one of over 250 essays chosen from the Lower Keys to win a $200.00 check for her outstanding essay! The 300-400 word essays were rubric scored in the areas of: knowledge of the theme, theme development and clarity of ideas.

Kate’s essay included these heartfelt thoughts and beliefs about America:

  • The America I believe in does not stand down, but stands up for what is just. Whether the issue is taxes or war, Americans use their voices.
  • The America I believe in, works to find a better solution even if taxes are needed to help. This act of standing up for what we believe in represents the America I believe in.
  • America is an established country and we can do anything we put our minds to. John F. Kennedy once said, “My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”

Congratulations to Kate for her faith in America and thank you to the Southernmost VFW Post 3911 for allowing the words of our future leaders to be heard.
FOCUS PARENT PORTAL
FOCUS Parent Portal Registration is now available!
FOCUS logo

The FOCUS Parent Portal is a tool designed to enhance communication and involvement for you in your child's education.  This portal will allow you to monitor your child's progress in school by providing timely access to both assignments and grades that are entered by the teacher throughout the grading period. This communication tool will improve your ability to assist your child and to communicate with the teacher if necessary.

In order to create a Parent Portal Account during the December 1 - 31 open enrollment period, you will need these three things:
1.  Your child's 10-digit ID number - this information is available from your child, from their portal page, or on their report card.
2.  The last 4 digits of your child's Social Security Number.  The SSN must be on file with the school in order for online registration to be completed.
3.  Your child's date of birth.

If you do not have the information listed above, or your child's SSN and/or date of birth are not in the FOCUS system, you will need to register in person at your child's school after January 9, 2017.

Once you have created your FOCUS Parent Portal account, you will be able to view your child's grades and attendance information by visiting the FOCUS login page (also linked under the Parents drop-down menu above).

EARLY PARENT PICK UP
Dear Parents,
If you intend to pick up your child before normal dismissal time, we ask that you please send a note with your child to the front office first thing in the morning stating when the child will be picked up and why. This will allow the office staff to write a dismissal pass so that your child can be waiting in the front office upon your arrival.  As students now must return their Chromebooks to their homeroom teacher before leaving, this will greatly simplify the process.
Thank you for your help with this!

HOB ATHLETICS NEWS

Dear Sir or Madame,
Three years ago, under the leadership of Principal Mike Henriquez and his administrators, the Horace O’Bryant School of Key West ventured to create an athletic program.  Henriquez and Athletic Director Kaitlyn Leeman created three teams.  Currently, Buccaneer volleyball and boys and girls basketball play at a competitive level.  We are very proud of all three teams.
As we move into the 2016-2017 school year, we have a new Principal, Christina McPherson, and Athletic Director, John Grimesey.  We endeavor to build on the foundation that has been established.  This means creating a multiple sports program that increases opportunity, accountability, and participation among our young people.
To that end, we have begun implementing our running club, which we hope to build into a competitive Cross Country team, and will open our 2017-2018 year with a football team and cheerleading squad.  After accomplishing the goal of putting together solid squads in cheerleading and football, we will move to expand to additional opportunities.  The accountability and participation will grow along with those opportunities.
As a Key West sports fan, you understand the need to fundraise to field the high school-type athletic program we are striving for.  This letter is the start of that fundraising effort.
Between now and winter break, we hope to hang 20 banners dedicated to our sponsors in the gym and on our athletic field fence.  These banners will measure 4 feet X 8 feet, will include your choice of artwork and will be visible to thousands of local sports fans.  The initial cost of banner sponsorship is $500, and the banner will hang through winter break 2017-2018.  After this time, continuing yearly sponsorship will cost $250.
Please contact me if you are willing to take part in this important program.  We appreciate how many requests of this type you receive.  We believe the benefits of our program will benefit the whole Key
West Community.

Thank you,

DISTRICT NEWS
Student Portal and Parent Portal News

Parents and Students -

The Monroe County School District has implemented a new student information system which includes replacement of the Pinnacle Gradebook. The FOCUS Student Portal is now available!  Students can sign on through the link under Students - FOCUS Student Login, and student login information has been provided to school administrators and gradebook managers.  The FOCUS Parent Portal is expected to be available in mid-September.  There will be a registration process for parents to have their own accounts to access the portal.  With that account, they will be able to view student grades and attendance.  A single account will be used to access information on all students in a family.

Thank you for your patience as we transition to a new system.  We hope that you will find the additional resources available through the Parent Portal helpful in monitoring your child’s academic success.

MCSD Students are Earning Industry Certifications

The Monroe County School District Division of Career and Adult Education congratulates Patricia, William, Christian, Hunter, Kiersten, Nicholas, and Ariadna for passing their IC3 Key Applications exam and earning their first industry certification.  With the support of their teacher, Phillip Baucom, these 7th graders have worked countless hours to ensure student success and understanding. The IC3 Digital Literacy program ensure that students are prepared to succeed in a technology-based world. IC3 Global Standard 4 (GS4) exam objectives are aligned with today's most current technologies and relevant digital literacy requirements, including social media, collaboration, and cloud computing concepts. The GS4 certification is comprised of three individual exams and is designed to validate competency in three key areas: Computing Fundamentals, Living Online, and Key Applications. This is the first year this opportunity has been provided to middle schoolers and there are currently 10 students districtwide who have earned this certification.  We expect to have more 6th and 7th grade students certify before the end of the school year.
